Ted leaves London and goes back to Kansas, but as he settles himself in Kansas, little by little he finds himself missing the things he left behind in Richmond. He finds little things that remind him of the life he built in Richmond all around him, of the neighborhood he loved, the team, Rebecca… He finds himself baking a batch of Rebecca’s biscuits one night because it’s familiar and it’s comforting. There’s a small part of himself that wishes he was back in Richmond… but he’s scared to listen to that part of himself because the whole reason he came back to Kansas to be with his son. Kansas is where he has to be. He can’t leave Henry again.

Henry notices how sad his dad is. Ted is trying to hide it from him. He brings it up with Michelle.

Michelle talks to Ted, asking him if he’s happy being back in Kansas. Ted tries to say that of course he’s happy. Michelle ‘Oklahoma’s’ him (and that reminds him of Rebecca). The floodgates open.

Henry overhears it. He has the power to take a sad song and make it better, Beard once told him. A day or two later, he tells his dad that he should be able to do what makes him happy and if going back to London would make him happy, maybe that’s what he should do. Henry can move to London with him (it would be an adventure), and maybe Michelle can move there as well.

A month or two later, Ted and Henry get on a plane to London. Rebecca invited them to come see the final AFC Richmond match of the current season.

Rebecca (who either broke up with Dutch Guy or never got together with him in the first place because Dutch Guy who? never heard of him) is waiting for them at the airport gate. She stands in the same spot as she did the last time, but instead of watching Ted leave, she gets to watch Ted come back, with Henry right beside him. Her tears are happy ones this time.

As soon as Ted is right in front of her for the very first time in too long, she lets the tears fall and smiles as she says, “Welcome back.” And softly adds, “I’ve missed you.”

It’s nearly drowned out by the sounds of the airport around them, but Ted hears her, and with tears of his own coming to his eyes, he smiles and says, “I’ve missed you too.”

They stare at each other without saying anything for a few seconds before Henry cuts the tension with a “Hi, Rebecca!” Rebecca laughs and greets and him back, happily listening to Henry’s chatter as the three of them leave the airport.

(And Rebecca, who hasn’t had a single biscuit since Ted left, later tells him that he owes her a year’s worth of pink boxes filled with biscuits.)

This came from thoughts/headcanons that came to me in a rush last night, after days of struggling to get an idea for Tedbecca-y fix-it fanfic to write so I can move on from the finale. This is so that, in case I never end up writing out this fanfic idea and putting it out on AO3, at least I’ll have written my idea out somewhere and been able to share it.

I might’ve had Sleepless In Seattle in mind when I thought of that last part with Rebecca meeting Ted and Henry at the airport gate.

looking-for-a-sword:

I really want to know all of your Tedbecca headcanons now. Here are mine so far:

- obviously they did have sex after the 3rd truth bomb

- on Ted’s last day at the club, when everyone has already left he building, Rebecca goes down to Ted’s office reminiscing.. only to find Ola’s green matchbook on Ted’s desk right next to some pens and (the blue and red) magnets

- at home Ted is cutting out Rebecca’s picture from the paper he got at the airport and keeps it in his pocket

- dutch guy and Rebecca get together for a few months. She adores his daughter and loves their time together but Rebecca soon realizes he is not her lightning, just some sunshine after Ted left

- Ted and Rebecca stayed in touch (of course) but it’s only after she broke up with the Dutch guy that Ted and her are texting each other more frequently again

- Rebecca anonymously donates new training gear and jerseys to Henry’s football team

- as soon as Henry goes to university (in England) Ted decides to move back to London - he plans on staying for a few months or years (but never leaves again - only for visiting Kansas)

- Ted left Rebecca his recipe for her biscuits before he left. She tries to recreate the biscuits, but they are just not the same as when he baked them for her.

The rest of this is wishful thinking…

- As he reacquaints himself with Kansas, little by little Ted finds himself missing the things he left behind in London. Some nights, he dreams about Richmond, his old neighborhood, the team, and most of all, Rebecca. Something inside him aches, just as much as it did back when he was away from his son. He hates it, because he came back to Kansas be with his son, where he belongs, but he can’t help but miss the life he left behind in Richmond.

- Ted texts Rebecca every day and though his conversations with her make him smile, why does he also feel a pain inside him.

- After a few months/year in Kansas, Henry notices Ted is sad and that he is trying to hide his sadness from Henry. Henry tells Michelle. Michelle talks to Ted and the floodgates open. Ted admits that he misses his life in Richmond. He misses the team, AFC Richmond, the community, Rebecca. There’s a part of him that wants to go back, but he’s scared to listen to that part of himself because he has to be in Kansas for Henry. He can’t leave Henry again. He feels lost.

- Michelle reveals to Ted that for past few years. between the divorce, the stress of her job, taking care of Henry, dating/ breaking up with Dr. Jacob, not focusing enough on her own well-being, she has been feeling lost too. She’s been secretly having thoughts about moving somewhere away from Kansas and starting fresh. But she can’t just uproot Henry.

- Henry, eavesdropping on his parents, feels sad that his parents are unhappy. He doesn’t sleep much that night, thinking about his parents’ conversation. Remembering what his Uncle Beard told him, about having the power to take a sad song and make it better, he gets an idea.

- A few days later, he’s having breakfast with his dad the next morning, Henry tells Ted he overheard him telling Michelle about missing London and how they’re both unhappy. Henry tells Ted that both him and Michelle deserve to be happy. If Ted misses London, and Michelle wants to start anew, maybe, they should all just move to London.

- Ted is shocked. Henry tells him that even though he’ll miss his friends and Kansas, he likes London and it would be cool to live there. It could be an adventure.

- Ted tells Michelle. Michelle is shocked too. They have a discussion between themselves and then with Henry about the idea of all three of them moving to London.

- A month or two later, Ted gets on a plane to London with Henry, to visit AFC Richmond for the final game of the season.

- Rebecca (who either broke up with Dutch Guy or never got together with him in the first place bc Dutch Guy who? never heard of him) is waiting for Ted and Henry at the gate at the airport. She’s there because Ted told her he and Henry were visiting and she canceled whatever she had in her schedule that morning to go pick them up.

- As soon as Ted is standing in front of her for the first time in too long, Rebecca can’t hold herself or her tears back. She throws her arms around him, hugging him tight. Ted hugs her back, tears coming to his own eyes.

- “Welcome back,” she says. “I missed you,” she adds softly. It’s nearly drowned out by the sounds of people around them, but Ted hears, smiles softly and tells her that he’s missed her too.

- While Ted and Rebecca stare at each other, not saying anything, Henry cheerfully greets Rebecca .

- Later, the three of them are at Rebecca’s house, where Ted and Henry are staying for their visit (at Rebecca’a insistence). Rebecca and Ted talk about AFC Richmond, about Kansas, and then Ted tells Rebecca that he has some big news. He’s moving back to London. Henry will move with him before the start of the school term and Michelle will eventually relocate to London too, after settling things with her house/her job/etc.

- As Ted starts talking about how it was Henry’s idea to move to London, how much he missed Richmond, Rebecca just stares at him, barely listening, processing Ted’s news. Then, as Ted continues talking and the news finally sinks in, for the first time in a year, Rebecca feels the little bit of pain that she carried around after Ted left, finally leave her chest.

- And maybe, just maybe, their year apart from each other caused Ted and Rebecca to individually discover something about the way they feel about about each other. Something beyond friendship. Something they may now have an chance to explore…

I’m so sorry, I meant to only write two or three headcanons but as I got writing, I suddenly had so many thoughts that kept pouring out of me. It’s all kinda ridiculous and maybe unrealistic but these were the thoughts I was having. Sorry if I went overboard!

Maybe I gave myself a fanfic idea finally…

Okay. BUCKLE UP.

To the people who say that we have no media literacy because we hoped til the very end that Ted and Rebecca would end up together: you can FUCK RIGHT OFF.

Recently, Hannah W. declared: “Is there chemistry beyond friendship? Yes, I think they do have that as well.”

But beyond that, there were A MILLION OTHER WAYS they could have done the last season (and arguably season 2) differently than what they did to avoid any ambiguity as to Ted and Rebecca’s relationship. They could have had them hang out all the bloody time and be the rock solid best friends in the world. Ted and Rebecca were never more than friendly co-workers since season 1 ended. That BFF, platonic bullshit was never a thing. If that was true, Ted would have had NO PROBLEM hugging the shit out of her in the stands in the last episode when she begged him to stay. Or again in the airport. They would have gushed over how they made each other’s life better and it would have been beautiful and moving and perfectly reasonable. Instead it was loaded with unsaid stuff between two people who never dared to get too close to one another. Keeley was Rebecca’s rock. Beard was Ted’s. Ted and Rebecca were something else. They were connected in unfathomable, cosmic ways. A perfect set up for a romcom, even if you dislike the idea.

But okay, playing the devil’s advocate here, if the platonic soulmates shtick was always the intent (and I don’t care what people think, I’m not sure it was), why not have them fall in love with other people early on but keep them as a tightly-knit tandem? Why keep them apart so much throughout the show and both single for most of it???? Why even establish they were born to meet then they never see each other again at the end?? Romance aside, what was the fucking point of that??

Let’s address your fucking condescension, shall we? I’ll tell you what media literacy fucking taught me:

  • That Rebecca immediately sensing Ted was having a panic attack, following him, and missing him by a hair, is a classic trick for lovers in a “wrong place, wrong time” kinda way. If they didn’t want to leave any space for ambiguity, she would have found him, comforted him and took him to Dr Fieldstone’s office herself without this need to overdramatise and make us long for said comfort that she was unable but clearly desperate to provide.
  • That Ted texting her for the first time on screen (15 times!!!) because he wanted to hang out at night in a foreign city JUST WHEN SHE LOSES HER PHONE IN A CANAL is a classic SEE ABOVE!! Fuck all of you, honestly.
  • That one half of the equation had been carrying a matchbook in his pocket the other half had been obsessing over for months means he is the answer to her romantic quest. And before you go and say that everyone got a matchbook that night, THAT’S NOT THE FUCKING POINT. They chose to show that Ted, of aaaaaaall the people in the restaurant that night, had been carrying Rebecca’s hopes and dreams in his pocket THE ENTIRE BLOODY TIME. It was an intentional, purposeful decision. They decided to drop that hot potato later on but you can’t blame us for thinking it would lead somewhere!
  • That one half of the equation carried a trinket in her bag the other half gave her YEARS BEFORE, means he is the one for her. Why? Because this was something he gave her to make her feel safe! Letting someone wonderful love her without fear of being safe was the thing she canonically admitted she was afraid of in a ROMANTIC relationship! The fact that the army man happened to be stuck in the green matchbook was frankly TAKING THE PISS.
  • That Ted’s official love interest having admitted she disliked his puns and having Rebecca laugh at one of his puns IN THE SAME EPISODE is meant to convey she’s the one and right under his nose!
  • That her love interest for the night unloading his marital struggles on her unprompted just like Ted did, loving the same songs as Ted and making her tea that had the same impact on her as Ted’s first biscuits means that what she looks for in a partner is right under her nose!
  • That having her bump into Ted in a corridor and both sensing each other in a choreographed dance MOMENTS after Higgins gave her a whole ass speech about how psychics could help her see in herself what she’s missing means IT WAS ALWAYS TED. Don’t even get me started on the fact that during said speech, the pink biscuit box was very conveniently placed just behind the green matchbook! A speech about her not seeing something about herself?? Uh??? FUCK OFF.
  • That Rebecca being told she will have a family and have her instigate Ted getting closer to his son and gushing over his mother is a clear indicator that she would fit in the Lasso household like a glove!
  • That having Ted canonically never ask for help and Rebecca being the one who doesn’t need him to because she always knows when he is unwell means she’s framed as being the right person for him. She also uses a trick his EX-WIFE used in the past for that exact purpose.
  • That their baggage matching right up meant they would have been perfect for each other. His biggest fear is being abandoned and hers is ending up alone. Ted and Rebecca were the logical option for a couple. Ted even had to begrudgingly admit it worked for Jane and Beard. The only canonically happy couple at the end (and ain’t that fucking mental…).
  • That having the line “Remember to let her into your heart” from the Hey Jude song coincide with Ted looking down at his phone and seeing Rebecca’s name means that she’s the woman he should allow himself to end up with.

Why keep them both single and desperate for love until the very last episode? Why not have Michelle beg Ted to come back and Dutch Guy find Rebecca thanks to newspaper clips about football in Holland 10 episodes ago and be done with it??

Everything in this show was intentional. You can’t marvel over this fact for everything BUT Ted and Rebecca and suddenly claim we read too much into things! We were played. Multiple times. At various degrees. And it doesn’t take being a fan of the show to see it:

A LA Times journalist made an article about the hints and clues in the show after she interviewed TedBecca fans. And she BELIEVED IT. She got convinced. She told Hannah W. in an interview.

Another journalist on CBR.com (male, so you can shove your “desperate women wanting the straight couple to be together at the end” where the sun ain’t shining) lamented the way the TedBecca shippers were treated.

Keep your passive-aggressive posts to yourselves. We’ve been dangled a carrot since day one and just because we never got to eat it doesn’t mean it was never there.

When you accidentally create a beautiful will-they-won’t-they between two middle-aged traumatized adults who have gone through hell, who truly see each other better than anyone and are there to help pick up each others pieces, throwing in parallels and making them soulmates, see the audience rooting for it and use that to add teasing scenes down to the last episode, just to not go through with it and tell said audience they’re just shipping a man and a woman because it’s what’s expected (while you had the nerve to make your female lead’s mystery bantr date her youngest player because he interacted with her once), even though everyone started to ship them because of actual build up and thought they were watching an organic slow burn friends to lovers in a hopeful show that referenced rom-coms and Nora Ephron…

Hi, I didn’t want to end my brief time in this fandom on a such low note, so I wanted to say thanks to you and everyone else too for all your Tedbecca/Ted Lasso posts. 💛 It’s been a fun/bright spot in this whole ride, even if the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for.

Thank you my love! (I hope that’s okay to say that. It’s a very British thing to say, even to strangers lol). The TedBecca bunch really is lovely, I was happy to discover. And the TL fandom in general, for the most part. It has, and will continue to be fun for me. It really is a wonderful show. Now that I had some time to cool off, I realise they gave me just enough in the finale to keep me content. If you know where to look and want Ted and Rebecca to end up stupidly happy ever after off screen, it’s all there.

If this is your last hurrah, I wish you well and I thank you also for being brilliant in your contribution and your kindness!
